Why now? Why me? Not again? What should I do?&#8221; One of definitively the biggest challenges of our job is precisely the mental preparation of athletes during an injury. In these situations, even the biggest skeptics loudly advocate for mental toughness and working on the &#8220;head.&#8221; However, the question arises of how to achieve that state, how to come out even stronger after an injury than before?<\/p>\n<h2>Stages of recovery from an injury<\/h2>\n<p>First of all, it is important to emphasize that in recovering from an injury, there are certain patterns and stages. Numerous studies support the fact that athletes pass through certain emotions and encounter similar thoughts during the stages of recovery. In many ways, these stages resemble the stages of grief. They are, in order: denial, anger, bargaining, and sadness, after which (preferably) comes the acceptance of the current situation.   <\/p>\n<p>Of course, not all athletes experience these emotions in the same order or with the same intensity, but we could say that the <strong>first stage <\/strong>is marked by frustration due to the injury, anger directed at oneself or someone else who might be responsible for the injury, and fear for the outcome of rehabilitation or career. <strong>The second stage <\/strong>continues with sadness and frustration related to the discomforts arising from the injury and a noticeable worry about progress in rehabilitation. <strong>The third stage<\/strong>, i.e., the final one before returning to training, is marked by thoughts focused on the fear of re-injury. Also, the level of self-confidence changes in accordance with the stages. It is common for an athlete to start rehabilitation with high self-confidence, then experience a certain drop during the recovery period, and a renewed increase in self-confidence near the very end. This final stage is quite sensitive because the athlete feels somewhat higher self-confidence than before and looks forward to returning to training, but at the same time fears re-injury.    <\/p>\n<h2>Recovery<\/h2>\n<p>The emphasis throughout the athlete&#8217;s recovery is placed on strengthening the athlete, their strengths, and capabilities, and providing support on that path. As difficult and strange as it may sound, work is done on accepting the injury itself and the potential benefits of this situation. In supporting the athlete, their entire social environment has an extremely important influence, starting from family, teammates, all the way to the medical staff with whom the athlete intensively cooperates. It is a great relief when the environment is focused on positive recovery outcomes and when they share a common mission of how to make this path as easy as possible for the athlete.<\/p>\n<p>Since the athlete is not able to fully influence their sports path during recovery, a lot of work is dedicated to <strong>setting goals<\/strong> during rehabilitation. In this way, the athlete retains at least a partial, perceived control over the pace of recovery by meeting small, daily goals. <\/p>\n<h3>Importance of mental preparation<\/h3>\n<p>Some of the athletes we have worked with so far have managed to reach the previously mentioned additional benefits of rehabilitation. Some started working more seriously on their mental preparation precisely during recovery, and played out their games, matches in their heads on a daily basis. They worked on <strong>visualizations<\/strong> of their play, technique, tactics, and all possible shots and moves. Consequently, they had the impression that their abilities were not deteriorating, but that they were polishing them in a way and staying active in their sport. Rehabilitation from an injury is a good period for working on deep relaxation exercises. <a style=\"color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/mentalnitrening.com\/en\/athletes\/deep-relaxation-exercises-in-sports\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Deep relaxation,<\/strong><\/a> such as autogenic training, besides having an impact on dealing with accumulated stress, extends its effects to the improved recovery of the injured area.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Biofeedback training<\/strong>, which we practice with our athletes, is another way to work on the mental empowerment of athletes.<\/p>\n<h3>An opportunity for growth<\/h3>\n<p>Some manage to find a <strong>deeper meaning <\/strong>or significance of the injury itself during recovery. Many times, an injury is an excellent test of character, which, once passed, remains deeply imprinted in the athlete&#8217;s mind. The feeling of pride that comes from dealing with such a challenge represents a source of personal strength and self-confidence in the future. Also, sometimes an injury is precisely what is &#8220;needed&#8221; for an athlete to look at problems through different eyes in the future, empowered by previous victories.   <\/p>\n<p>Our experience tells us that an injury and the temporary interruption of training and competition do not have to be such a stressful and traumatic period. That time can be qualitatively used for mental preparation, additional empowerment, and the polishing of mental skills. In our work, we have met athletes who truly came out stronger after an injury than before, and some even managed to achieve a transfer to a better club during recovery.  <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Things are not the way they are, but the way we see them.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We often hear or read in the newspapers: &#8220;I have to stay tough in my head.
