This is, of course, a generally known fact. However, like everything in life, sport also has another side of the medal, which is not talked about as much in different spheres of life, and least of all in the media. What exactly is meant when we say the other side of the medal?   <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mentalnitrening.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Mentalni-trening-mentalno-zdravlje2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"707\" height=\"707\"><\/p>\n<h2>The challenges of playing sports in youth categories<\/h2>\n<p>In youth categories, parents and coaches, as adult figures in their lives, sometimes present a problem. Here, first of all, we should emphasize that not all parents and coaches are like that. On the contrary, the vast majority of parents and coaches are wonderful people who want the best for the children they work with and find ways to help them grow into future athletes or young people with healthy sporting habits.  <\/p>\n<p>However, sometimes we happen to <strong><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/mentalnitrening.com\/en\/for-parents\/how-parents-build-an-athletes-self-confidence-through-upbringing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">encounter pressure from parents<\/a><\/strong> for children to persist in a sport even though they have expressed a desire for a break or to quit, or excessive involvement in training sessions and competitions in a way that emphasizes the importance of victory and a high level of performance at every opportunity, while anything less than that is not good enough, which then leads to extremely poor experiences in sport. Furthermore, we also happen to encounter insufficiently capable coaches, in a managerial and communication sense, which also represents a major problem that can lead to dropping out of that specific sport, and sometimes sports in general. In the worst-case scenario, it can lead to mental disorders, which we will touch upon a bit later in the text.  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mentalnitrening.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Mentalni-trening-mentalno-zdravlje3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"423\"><\/p>\n<h2>Adolescents and elite athletes<\/h2>\n<p>When it comes to adolescents and elite athletes, similar problems arise, although they are, of course, much greater among elite athletes. Extremely intense training sessions, a special diet regime and habits, the pressure to always have a high level of performance, separation from family due to training camps, and constant monitoring by the coach and the public in everything they do are serious challenges that athletes face daily. Because of the above, compared to their non-athlete peers, they can experience a much higher level of stress, exhibit a higher level of aggressiveness, and consume a larger amount of alcohol and other psychoactive substances. Data on mental disorders in these populations are also highly alarming.   <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mentalnitrening.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Mentalni-trening-mentalno-zdravlje4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"1440\"><\/p>\n<h2>A few numbers and percentages on athletes&#8217; mental health<\/h2>\n<p>Namely, a review of research across various sports yields different percentages, but the numbers vary from 5% for burnout and excessive alcohol use to as much as a 45% prevalence of depression and anxiety disorders (social anxiety, generalized anxiety disorder)! Along with the aforementioned, eating disorders are also common from sport to sport, varying from 0% to 19% for male athletes and 6% to 45% for female athletes. Unfortunately, in extreme cases, suicide can also occur, but fortunately, unlike the other mentioned disorders, it is at a lower percentage compared to the general population. Special attention needs to be paid to athletes who are <strong><a style=\"color: #000000; text-decoration: underline;\" href=\"https:\/\/mentalnitrening.com\/en\/athletes\/and-what-during-an-injury\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">injured <\/a><\/strong>and\/or have had several surgeries, as they are at an increased risk of suffering from mental disorders, especially depression and anxiety disorder.   <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mentalnitrening.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Mentalni-trening-mentalno-zdravlje5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"620\" height=\"370\"><\/p>\n<h2>Protecting the mental health of athletes<\/h2>\n<p>Now that we have briefly presented the situation, you are surely wondering what is being done about it. The answer is, unfortunately, not enough. Athletes are all too often not inclined to seek help for several reasons \u2013 the still-present stigma that if someone seeks the help of a psychologist they are &#8220;crazy&#8221; or simply a &#8220;weakling,&#8221; shame, worry about the perception of others and the protection of privacy, and the pressure that they must always behave in a certain way, while seeking a psychologist&#8217;s help absolutely does not fit into that, are the most common reasons.  <\/p>\n<p>A lack of information about sources of help and the symptoms of mental disorders are also reasons for not seeking the necessary help. The already mentioned stigma is so deeply rooted in people&#8217;s lives that sometimes even those who work with athletes do not want to advise them to seek professional help, even though they could be key to improving the athlete&#8217;s health. Another concerning statistic is that only 10% of student-athletes in the USA with mental disorders actually seek help, and 72% of them have to look for that same help outside the center where they train.  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mentalnitrening.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Mentalni-trening-4-koraka-navike-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"640\"><\/p>\n<h2>What can be done?<\/h2>\n<p>The support and encouragement of coaches, friends, and family are the main reasons why athletes do seek help after all, and this is something that everyone who works with young, as well as elite athletes, should always keep in mind. All the mentioned problems and obstacles toward better mental health are something that coaches, sports staff, sports psychologists, and other professionals working with athletes primarily need to work on, by educating themselves better and more, and by always being a support to their athletes. In this way, they give them the knowledge and courage to seek help and take care of themselves, first with the help of a professional, and later independently of others.  <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/mentalnitrening.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Mentalni-trening-mentalno-zdravlje6.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"960\" height=\"641\"><\/p>\n<h2>Famous athletes who have spoken out about mental health<\/h2>\n<p>In conclusion, regardless of whether you are an athlete or not, if you found yourself in this text, please do not be ashamed to seek professional help.
