{"id":10836,"date":"2016-05-09T14:25:43","date_gmt":"2016-05-09T12:25:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mentalnitrening.com\/uncategorized\/mental-training-or-the-last-drops-in-the-cup-of-success\/"},"modified":"2016-05-09T14:25:43","modified_gmt":"2016-05-09T12:25:43","slug":"mental-training-or-the-last-drops-in-the-cup-of-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mentalnitrening.com\/en\/athletes\/mental-training-or-the-last-drops-in-the-cup-of-success\/","title":{"rendered":"Mental Training or \u201cThe Last Drops in the Cup of Success\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">It is difficult to imagine a top coach or athlete who believes that psychological readiness does not affect the outcome of their work.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">Psychological Collapse<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">In fact, if we follow sports, we frequently notice or conclude that the outcome of a match or game would have been different had the other team not &#8220;collapsed psychologically,&#8221; had the opponent been more motivated, or had they kept a &#8220;cool head.&#8221; These are usually the pivotal moments in elite sports\u2014moments that decide the winner of a world championship, Olympic qualifiers, and so on. However, for young up-and-coming athletes, semi-professionals, and amateurs, such moments can occur at a regional championship, a national championship, or a tournament that is important to them. For this reason, the field of sports psychology has experienced significant growth and progress over the last 35 to 40 years, particularly in the form of applied sports psychology &#8211; that is, sports counseling.    <\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">The Importance of Sports Psychology<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">Sports coaches, psychologists, and athletic professionals noticed long ago, as early as the beginning of the twentieth century, that an athlete&#8217;s performance is influenced by their mental readiness, motivation, emotions, attitudes, beliefs, as well as their level of anxiety or pre-competition jitters. Of course, all these mentioned factors build upon the work already done in training through a properly programmed and executed training process. <\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\">However, let us assume that an individual is responsible for 90% of their own success, while the remaining 10% is shared by the coach, psychologist, circumstances beyond control, etc. It seems that if all factors are met, an individual&#8217;s mental readiness &#8211; which accounts for a mere 2\u20133% &#8211; can be decisive in moments where fine margins matter. Now, when we talk about 2\u20133%, it is of course a rough estimate and an approximation that is very difficult to measure, but if an athlete is mentally unprepared, their loss is certainly no longer just 2\u20133%. A drop in motivation, nervousness, fear, and a loss of focus at a crucial moment (a match, a race, a game) no longer mean 2\u20133%; they mean all or nothing, victory or defeat &#8211; in other words, 100%. The question arises: how do we control that 2\u20133% so that it creates a shift in the right direction?<\/p>\n<h3>Techniques<\/h3>\n<p>Today, many techniques are offered to young and elite athletes to improve their mental control, control over fear, jitters, excitement, thoughts, and emotions in general. However, are athletes truly so similar that a single book and a single template could suit them all perfectly? Is there a rule everyone must follow? If that were the case, one good book would be enough to describe all the athletes in this world &#8211; and not just athletes, but people in general.   <\/p>\n<p>Of course, things are much more complicated than they often appear in the media and sports circles. The fact is that while similarities exist among all of us, it is our differences that make us special &#8211; what makes athletes either elite or average. The same rule applies to sports psychology.  <\/p>\n<p><strong>There is no simple recipe for success for all athletes<\/strong>; instead, we must choose the ingredients carefully and specifically for each individual. Therefore, the process of psychologically preparing an athlete is not simple. However, for an athlete aiming for 100% rather than 98% of their potential, and for those who insist on winning rather than merely avoiding defeat, psychological preparation becomes an indispensable part of training. <\/p>\n<h3>Individual Approach<\/h3>\n<p>Although the approach is most frequently individualized, there are some common themes and mental training techniques used with the majority of athletes. Significant individual differences appear in the speed at which these techniques are implemented and mastered, as well as differences in the specific techniques used depending on the sport in question. A counselor or psychologist utilizes techniques to improve motivation, learning, concentration, emotional and thought self-control, mindfulness, and communication; in team sports, they often work on group cohesion, dynamics, leadership, and team building.  <\/p>\n<p>Although meeting topics are usually related to sports, some discussed subjects are only indirectly linked to sports but leave a clear and profound mark on an individual&#8217;s performance. The goal is to eliminate or control these problems\u2014distractors\u2014so that the athlete can channel their energy into things directly related to their athletic activity. Most of the time in the office, the athlete spends talking with their counselor, working together to find solutions to the difficulties the athlete encounters. However, a good portion of the time is also spent learning new techniques and exercises, such as breathing, meditation, and visualization, as well as how and when to apply them in a sporting environment.  <\/p>\n<h3>Group Approach<\/h3>\n<p>A psychological preparation program can also be implemented at a group level; however, in that case, the pace of work is somewhat predetermined, and the techniques taught are suited to the majority. This group method of working is particularly beneficial for team sports, but it is essential to keep group numbers small and, to some extent, look after the individual needs of particular members. <\/p>\n<p>Group counseling for athletes can be highly effective, but it should still be emphasized that an individual approach, if resources allow, remains a more appropriate and precise way of working for both the athlete and the counselor. It is free from additional distracting factors, meaning it does not depend on the relationships between group members, varying needs, closeness among members, etc. <\/p>\n<p><strong>Be that as it may, an athlete&#8217;s mental training is a very important part of the training process that can decide victory or defeat, success or failure. Even though we are talking about the last few drops in the cup of success, without those drops, an athlete can very easily be left thirsty.
